Southland Festival of the Arts underway

The ninth annual Southland Festival of the Arts opens tonight at the Stewart Island Community Centre with legendary kiwi Music Hall of Fame artist and expat Southlander, Moana Maniapoto.

This year the festival is host to 19 different shows, comprising 46 individual events from now until May 20, taking place all over Southland. Fifty-four people from these productions will be in Southland for the festival.

Venture Southland programmes and manages the festival, bringing in many performance-based events that would not normally travel to the South.  This is enabled by funders and sponsors who generously contribute to the festival, ensuring ticket prices are kept to an accessible level.

Festival director Angela Newell is excited about this year’s festival which has an eclectic mix of performance in all genres. “The shows we’re presenting this year range from comedy to supernatural thriller. There are also special donation-only shows that allow people to try out different kinds of music, from jazz to classical, choral and even ukuleles”

“This year’s festival should reach more Southlanders than ever, with a dozen shows presented in rural areas, especially accessed by school-aged children as well as the wider community.”
