Work to replace stormwater and foul sewer drains on both sides of Tay Street will start on Monday (22 January 2018) and is expected to be finished in October.

The $2.8 million project involves replacing brick pipes originally installed in the 1870s between the intersection of Nith and Kelvin Streets and the Queens Drive/Elles Road intersection. It also includes work in Nith Street between Tay Street and the Otepuni Stream.

Pipes for the new stormwater  system range in diameter from 300mm to 525mm  and will be laid  alongside the old brick drain, which will be abandoned. The old earthenware sewerage pipes will be replaced with 150mm diameter pipes.

During the project, Tay Street traffic will be restricted to a single lane in each direction corresponding with the location of the works. The footpath will remain open at all times and access to businesses and residents will remain.

The Council and the contractors, Seipp Construction, will keep in touch with  businesses and people directly affected by the upgrade project, and the contractors will do the work in stages  to help minimise disruption.
