Earthquake strengthening work on Anderson House could begin at the end of 2016, Invercargill City Council chief executive Richard King says. However the $800,000 strengthening work cannot start until another purpose is found for the historic home.
The Southland Times reported Mr King as saying the fate of the house – the former home of a 1,000-piece art collection – hinged on decisions from the Southland Regional Development Strategy.
Council increased the annual Invercargill Public Art Gallery grant by $120,000 for 2016-2017. The money would not be released to the gallery until a permanent location for the collection was determined.
