Venue: Victoria Rooms, Civic Theatre
Running time: 2 hours (including intermission).
Trailblazing 17th-century writer Aphra Behn has inspired countless women in the arts and is the perfect patron saint for the Behn Quartet. These fresh, fierce women have been earning rave reviews since they formed only two years ago. Winners of the 2016 Amadeus Prize, they also hold the Cavatina Chamber Music Fellowship at the Royal Academy of Music.
Christchurch-born Kate Oswin brings the quartet home to perform a programme of chamber music favourites. The folk song influences in Dvorak’s “American” quartet ensure it is one of the most loved in the repertoire, while the classical restraint of Ravel’s String Quartet in F major reveals devastating depths of emotion. Jack Body’s Three Transcriptions re-creates the sounds of Madagascan zither and Bulgarian village bands.
Energetic, revelatory and inspiring, you don’t want to miss the Behn Quartet in concert. Aphra would be proud.
