Upstage Invercargill Festival of Cabaret is gearing up for its 2024 event – and expressions of interest are sought from any community members wanting to add some spice and variety to the show this August.
This year’s Upstage Invercargill will be held from August 30 to September 7 at locations around Invercargill, following the success of the inaugural festival in 2023, which featured headliner Ali Harper performing as Judy Garland, an all-female stand-up comedy evening, vaudeville performances and the Gin in the City masterclass.
Venues ranged from the Civic Theatre to the Scottish Hall and the Langlands 360 bar in the city centre.
The 2024 festival promised to be even more vibrant, said Invercargill City Council Venues Manager Jason Wade.
“We’re seeking to ignite the imaginations of diverse audiences, from bold thrill-seekers to curious newcomers,” Wade said.
“Expressions of interest are welcome to help include more events in the festival and spread venues across Invercargill.
“We want to encourage both local and national producers to create great work and be part of an awesome festival,” Wade added.
“At the heart of cabaret your event should be a little bit naughty, maybe drag, comedy, dance, theatre or burlesque – we want to know what’s out there.”
The deadline for expressions of interest to be a producer or venue is April 10. This can be submitted by emailing CabaretFestival@icc.govt.nz for a form or by using the online form on the Council website.
“We’re looking forward to the creative submissions that I know are coming our way,” Wade said.
