The Southland Museum and Art Gallery is open after it was evacuated earlier this afternoon over fire safety concerns.

A Council spokesman said the Gala Street building has been declared safe to use.

An electrician is carrying out repairs after a small transformer overheated in the switchboard. That work will not affect the public or the safety of the museum which will be open as normal this weekend (10am to 5pm).
