“The tours will provide Southlanders with the tools to effectively manage waste and recycling products in the wider Southland region,” said WasteNet Senior Waste Officer Donna Peterson. “People who attended tours in previous years commented on the unique experience and the insight into Southland’s waste and recycling system.”
She noted that countries such as Canada had been celebrating Waste Reduction Week annually since 2001. “We may have changed the name to `awareness’ rather than `reduction’ but the aims are still the same,” Ms Peterson said. “We hope to inform Southlanders about what happens to our waste, where it goes, how much we waste and encourage waste reduction behaviour in everyday life.”
