Bluff Community Board Bursary applications now open

Growing up in Bluff, surrounded by nature, Brodie Bradshaw was sure she wanted to do something to help the environment when she got older.

Now, Bradshaw is about to head into her final year studying Industrial Product Design at the University of Canterbury, with the vision of designing something to support conservation.

Her journey has been assisted with the help of the Bluff Community Board Bursary, of which she was the recipient in 2023.

Industrial Product Design is an impressive-sounding qualification that comes with an even grander list of tech to go along with it.

The funds Bradshaw was awarded have been put towards a laptop, software and other resources required for her studies.

“Standard laptops aren’t able to run the specific software needed, and neither are cheap, so I’m really grateful that the Community Board offered me the bursary so that I can continue with my studies.”

Growing up in an area that took such pride in its natural environment encouraged Bradshaw to chase her dreams and potentially give something back that could help her hometown, she said.

“The Bluff Community Board has done so much for the likes of Bluff Hill Motupōhue, so I’m inspired to follow in their footsteps and do something for the environment.”

In her final year, Bradshaw will need to complete a major project that involves designing a product and she thinks it will be something that will likely help native animals.

“I highly recommend anyone who wishes to pursue their dreams to apply for the bursary, it’s been so helpful to getting me to where I am now.”

Bluff Community Board Chairman Ray Fife said he was pleased the board could support young Bluffies in their future endeavours.

“The aim of the bursary is getting our own people to where they want to be. It’s such a privilege to be able to help these talented individuals. I’m looking forward to seeing the calibre of applicants this time around.”

The Bluff Community Bursary is $2000 per annum for three years and is for locals who wish to study in the new year.

The Bursary is available for candidates who are enrolled for full-time study at university or another agreed establishment within New Zealand, or candidates who are making applications for admission to a university or other agreed establishment within New Zealand to a full-time course of study in the coming year.

More information and application forms are available from the Bluff Service Centre on Gore St between 8.30am and 5pm. Applications close on Friday 15 January 2025.
